February 28, 1861

On this day in 1861, Congress created Colorado Territory.

The United States acquired the area which later become known as Colorado, in 1848 after the Mexican War.

During the Pike’s Peak gold rush which lasted from 1858 to 1861, the area exploded in population.

Congress decided the area should become it’s own territory.

Colorado officially became a state on August 1, 1876.
